What moves the number most: tonnage (how big a system your home actually needs), SEER2 efficiency rating, whether the existing ductwork can carry the airflow, and how accessible the equipment is. How Do I Know What Size System I Need?

Not by square footage. That is the shortcut, and it is why so many DFW homes end up with a system that is too big.

A properly sized system comes from a load calculation — the industry calls it a Manual J. It accounts for square footage, but also insulation levels, window area and orientation, ceiling height, how much shade the house gets, and how leaky the envelope is. Two identical-looking houses on the same Hurst street can genuinely need different tonnage if one sits under a 50-year-old oak canopy and the other bakes in full west sun.

Oversized is not “extra safe” — it is worse. An oversized AC cools the air fast, hits the thermostat target, and shuts off before it has pulled the humidity out. You get a house that is cold and clammy, a compressor that short-cycles itself to an early death, and higher bills. Undersized runs constantly and never quite gets there.

  • Warranty terms in writing — parts warranty length, labour warranty length, and who registers the manufacturer warranty
  • Removal and disposal of the old equipment
  • A realistic timeline — most single-system residential replacements are a one-day job

If a quote is one number on one line with no breakdown, you cannot compare it to anything. That is usually the point.

Do I Have to Replace the Whole System?

Sometimes no, but it is more restricted than people expect.

You can replace just the indoor coil or just the outdoor unit if:

  • Both halves use the same refrigerant. An R-22 outdoor unit cannot pair with a new indoor coil
  • The new part carries an AHRI match certificate for your existing unit
  • The remaining half is genuinely young and healthy

Why it is usually a bad idea anyway: a new coil on an old condenser drops the efficiency of the whole system, many manufacturers void the parts warranty if the pair is not installed as a matched set, and if the old half fails a year later you pay the labour twice.

The honest rule: if one half fails and the other is over ten years old, replacing both together is almost always cheaper across the next five years than replacing them a year apart.

What Changed With Refrigerant in 2026?

Worth knowing before you buy, because it affects both what you are quoted and what your old system is worth.

R-22 — the refrigerant in most pre-2010 systems. Production ended in 2020. It still exists, but scarcity has pushed the price high enough that a leak repair on an R-22 system can pass $1,000 on its own. In a lot of older Hurst homes this is the single reason replacement wins over repair.

R-410A — the standard for roughly fifteen years. Production for new equipment ended in January 2025 under the AIM Act. Existing systems can still be serviced and recharged; you simply cannot buy a new R-410A system.

R-454B and R-32 — what new systems use now. They cost somewhat more, which is an industry-wide regulatory change rather than a markup any company invented.

What this means for you: if you are weighing a big repair on an R-22 system, the refrigerant maths has already made the decision. If your system is R-410A and healthy, there is no urgency — you are not obsolete, and nobody should tell you that you are.

Repair or Replace? Run the Numbers First

Before any of the above matters, check whether you actually need a new system.

Multiply your system’s age by the repair quote. If the result clears $5,000, replacement usually wins. A 12-year-old system with a $500 repair is 12 × 500 = $6,000 — lean replacement. A 6-year-old system with a $400 repair is $2,400 — fix it.

How an Installation Day Actually Runs

1. Survey and load calculation. We look at the equipment, the attic, the ductwork and the electrical, then run the calculation. You get options in writing — usually a repair option where one still exists, a like-for-like replacement, and an efficiency upgrade with the payback maths attached.

2. You choose, nobody pushes. If the mid option is right for your house, we will say so rather than steering you to the top one.

3. Install day. Most single-system residential replacements are completed in a day. Old equipment removed and hauled away, new system set, refrigerant lines evacuated properly and charged to manufacturer spec, condensate handled, thermostat configured.

4. Commissioning and paperwork. The system is tested under load, not just switched on. You get the model numbers, the AHRI certificate, the warranty registration and the permit documentation.
